Applications
Fan Motor Applications: Dehumidifiers, Purifiers, Exhaust Fans and HVAC
The same motor can behave very differently in two appliances. These notes start from the duty cycle and air path of each application, then point to the platform and model that usually fits.
Application 01
Dehumidifier fan motors
A dehumidifier runs for hours in a room that is already humid, pulling moist air across a cold evaporator and pushing warm, dry air back into the room. The motor therefore has to survive condensation, a warm air stream and a duty cycle that never really stops.
What the motor must handle
- · Continuous operation, often 24 h/day in basements and drying rooms
- · Moist air path: IP54 protection and class F insulation as a minimum
- · Noise in a living space — typically a 30–40 dB(A) target at the appliance
- · Low starting torque requirement, but stable speed as the coil ices and defrosts
- · Compact mounting near the evaporator and condenser coils
Application 02
Air purifier motors
A purifier is an airflow problem before it is a motor problem. A clean HEPA filter has a modest pressure drop; a loaded one can double it. If the motor is sized only for the clean filter, delivered clean air volume falls off within weeks.
What the motor must handle
- · Rising system resistance as filters load — size for the dirty filter, not the clean one
- · PWM or analog speed control from the appliance main board
- · Speed feedback for constant-airflow control and filter-life estimation
- · 25–30 dB(A) at low speed, because the unit runs at night in bedrooms
- · Long life: 20,000–30,000 h bearing design is normal for the category
Application 03
Bathroom and exhaust fan motors
Bathroom exhaust fans run unattended for long periods in humid air. The motor is small, hidden behind the grille, and expected to be quiet, reliable and cheap to run. Brushless motors win here because there is no brush wear and the efficiency is higher at low power.
What the motor must handle
- · Low power (6–24 W) with steady airflow across a long service life
- · Compact axial height to fit standard fan bodies and window units
- · Moisture and dust: sealed covers and IP54 where the design allows
- · Simple installation for high-volume assembly — integrated driver saves wiring
Application 04
Range hood and kitchen exhaust motors
Kitchen exhaust is the harshest household fan duty: hot air, oil mist and a long duct run that demands static pressure. Motors here need thermal headroom and an insulation system that does not absorb grease.
What the motor must handle
- · High static pressure from long ducts and grease filters
- · Ambient temperatures well above a normal fan
- · Oil mist that attacks unprotected windings and bearings
- · 150–400 W class output on a 120 mm stator platform
- · Quiet operation at working speed, usually 40 dB(A) or lower
Application 05
Air curtain motors
An air curtain pushes a steady sheet of air across a doorway for many hours a day, often with a double-shaft arrangement driving two blowers. Duty is continuous and the acoustic target is commercial rather than domestic.
What the motor must handle
- · Continuous commercial duty, 2,000+ hours per year
- · Dual-shaft or long-shaft configuration
- · 48–200 W output with stable speed under constant load
- · Service access for bearings and driver replacement
Application 06
Commercial HVAC and evaporative coolers
Condenser fans, ventilation units and evaporative coolers are fixed-speed, cost-sensitive and expected to run for years outdoors or in plant rooms. This is where a robust AC induction motor is often the rational choice, with BLDC reserved for units that need speed control.
What the motor must handle
- · Wide ambient range, dust and occasional water spray
- · 80–200 W class output with thermal protection against stall
- · Multi-voltage 110 V/60 Hz and 230 V/50 Hz supply
- · Long service intervals, easy field replacement
Application to motor mapping
A short reference for early-stage selection. Final choice depends on the impeller curve, duct system and annual volume.
